- Rinse and sort the black eyed peas, removing any debris.
- Add the black eyed peas, water or broth, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and bay leaf to the crock pot.
- Stir to combine all ingredients.

- Remove the bay leaf before serving.
