For the Cake
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup cold water

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate small bowl or cup, combine the vinegar, vanilla extract, vegetable oil, and cold water.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

You can frost this cake with your favorite frosting once it has cooled completely. It is also delicious served plain.
